San Clemente - Ermita de San Roque (2016)

La ermita se sitúa en la ruta del Camino de Santiago y era lugar de oración y descanso para los peregrinos que elegían esta vía, como atestiguan los poyos que recorren los muros tanto en el exterior como en el interior. Antiguamente, los grandes arcos de sus muros estaban abiertos para que la cruz que albergaba fuera visible desde fuera del templo.

De los huecos vanos practicados en sus muros y por la construcción a modo de templete se deduce que fue antes ermita de la Cruz Cerrada y que se construyó exclusivamente para albergar la impresionante cruz de humilladero labrada en alabastro que actualmente se exhibe en una capilla de la parroquia de Santiago Apóstol.

Cuando San Roque se ganó la devoción de los sanclementinos al considerar que había atendido sus ruegos se ganó el traslado a esta ermita, que desde entonces se conoce como ermita de San Roque.

The hermitage is on the Santiago Way route and was a place for prayer and rest for the pilgrims choosing this road, as can be seen from the stone benches along the walls both inside and outside. In the old days, the large arc in the walls was open so that the cross that was inside was visible from outside the temple.

From the blind windows opening out of its walls and its construction by way of a temple, we can deduce that it was built for the sole purpose of housing the impressive crucifix, or Calvary cross, made of alabaster, which can nowadays be seen in a chapel in the parish church of Saint James Apostle.

When Saint Roque gained the devotion of the people of San Clemente, as they considered that he had answered their prayers against the plague, he was moved to this hermitage which, since then, is also known as the hermitage of Saint Roque.
